A Typical Day

  • Set Construction and Assembly: Build set pieces using a variety of materials, including wood, metal, fabric, and lightweight alternatives like foam or plastics. Experience with constructing custom furniture and props is essential.
  • Technical Interpretation: Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics accurately. Proficiency in using drafting software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Vectorworks is highly desirable.
  • Tool Operation and Safety: Operate power tools safely and efficiently, including saws (table, circular, miter), drills, sanders, and grinders. Perform welding and soldering tasks when working with metal components. Adhere to all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Fabrication Techniques: Utilize various fabrication techniques, including welding, soldering, carpentry, and scenic painting. Knowledge of aircraft wire usage and dowel connections is beneficial.
  • Electrical Wiring: Wire addressable LED strips and integrate lighting elements into set pieces. Understand electrical safety and basic circuitry to ensure installations meet code requirements.
  • Material Knowledge: Select appropriate materials based on structural needs, weight limitations, and fire safety regulations. Familiarity with Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR) materials and treatments is required.
  • Modular Design: Design set pieces with modularity in mind for efficient shipping, assembly, and disassembly. Create solutions that facilitate quick setup and strike during events.
  • Logistics Coordination: Manage the transportation of large or fragile set pieces, coordinating with logistics teams to ensure safe and timely delivery to event venues.
  • Workshop Management: Maintain an organized workspace, manage inventory of materials and tools, and ensure all equipment is in good working condition.
  • Team Leadership: Lead teams of unskilled or semi-skilled labor during on-site deployments, providing clear instructions and ensuring adherence to design specifications.
  • Problem-Solving: Adapt designs and fabrication methods to accommodate on-site challenges or last-minute changes while maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic quality.
  • Quality Assurance: Inspect all fabricated elements for quality, safety, and compliance with design specifications before deployment.

Your Expertise

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in fabrication, set construction, or scenic carpentry within the live events, theater, or film industry.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in using power tools, welding equipment, and drafting software. Ability to perform precise measurements and calculations.
  • Certifications: Certifications in welding (e.g., AWS Certified Welder), carpentry, or related fields are advantageous.
  • Creative Problem-Solving: Ability to innovate and adapt designs to meet client needs and site-specific challenges.
  • Electrical Knowledge: Understanding of basic electrical wiring and safety, especially relating to low-voltage LED systems.
  • Leadership Abilities: Experience leading teams, with strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Physical Stamina: Capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials (up to 75 lbs), standing for extended periods, and working in various environmental conditions.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous in craftsmanship, ensuring high-quality finishes and adherence to design specifications.
  • Safety Consciousness: Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment, following all OSHA regulations and company safety policies.

Pay Range

  • Pay range is $45-$65 p/h
