A Typical Day

  • Electrical System Design: Develop comprehensive electrical plans for events, including power distribution layouts, load calculations, and redundancy systems to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
  • Code Compliance: Ensure all electrical installations comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, and industry best practices.
  • Power Distribution Management: Set up and manage power distribution systems, including the safe tie-in and tie-out from generators, transformers, and venue power sources using equipment like camlocks, distro boxes, and feeder cables.
  • Load Balancing: Calculate and balance electrical loads across phases to prevent overloading circuits and ensure efficient power usage.
  • Generator Synchronization: Coordinate the use of multiple generators, synchronizing them when necessary to handle high power demands.
  • Safety Inspections: Conduct thorough inspections of all electrical equipment and installations before, during, and after events to identify and rectify potential hazards.
  • Documentation: Prepare detailed electrical schematics, load calculations, and safety documentation. Maintain records of inspections, maintenance, and incident reports.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, including dimmers, cable runs, breakers, and switchgear.
  • Team Supervision: Lead and supervise a team of electricians and technicians during event setups and strikes, providing guidance and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Emergency Response: Develop and implement emergency procedures for electrical failures, including quick restoration plans and backup power solutions.
  • Training and Compliance: Provide training to crew members on electrical safety practices, proper use of equipment, and compliance with regulations.
  • Coordination with Other Departments: Collaborate closely with lighting, audio, video, and rigging teams to ensure electrical needs are met without compromising safety or functionality.
  • Cable Management: Design and implement efficient cable management systems to minimize trip hazards and interference with other equipment.
  • Permitting and Inspections: Obtain necessary permits and coordinate with local authorities for inspections when required.

Your Expertise

  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience as an electrician in live event production, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Technical Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of electrical systems, power distribution, and electrical code requirements. Familiarity with event-specific equipment like camlocks, feeder cables, and distro boxes.
  • Safety Expertise: In-depth understanding of NEC, OSHA, and industry safety standards. Ability to conduct safety training and enforce compliance.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical issues under pressure.
  • Leadership Abilities: Proven experience leading teams, with excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Physical Ability: Capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy equipment (up to 75 lbs), working at heights, and in various environmental conditions.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous in planning, documentation, and execution to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Certifications: Additional certifications such as ETCP Entertainment Electrician, OSHA 30-Hour General Industry, and equipment operation certifications (forklift, scissor lift) are highly desirable.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in using software for electrical design and documentation, such as AutoCAD or Bluebeam.
  • Professionalism: Punctual, reliable, and able to maintain composure under pressure.

Pay Range

Pay range is $45-$65 p/h
