A Typical Day

Lighting Design: Develop innovative lighting designs that enhance the event’s aesthetic and meet client objectives.
Console Operation: Specialize in operating lighting consoles such as GrandMA, Chamsys, HOG, or Avolites. Ability to program complex cues and effects.
Visualization Software: Use tools like Capture, WYSIWYG, or Vectorworks to create detailed lighting plots, renderings, and technical documentation.
Documentation: Prepare lighting documentation, including fixture schedules, patch lists, and power distribution plans using software like Lightwright.
Equipment Knowledge: Understand the components of moving head lights and other fixtures, capable of performing maintenance and basic repairs.
Color Theory Application: Apply knowledge of color theory to create visually compelling scenes, utilizing techniques like color mixing and temperature adjustments.
Event Adaptability: Design lighting for various event types, including concerts, corporate events, and theatrical productions.
Pixel Mapping and Effects: Incorporate pixel mapping and create custom effects for LED fixtures. Experience integrating media servers like Resolume or Disguise is beneficial.
Network Protocols: Manage lighting control protocols such as DMX, ArtNet, and sACN. Set up and troubleshoot lighting networks.
On-Site Management: Oversee the setup, focusing, and troubleshooting of lighting rigs on-site. Coordinate with crew to ensure accurate implementation of the design.
Safety Compliance: Ensure all lighting installations comply with safety standards. Knowledge of proper rigging techniques and power distribution is essential.
Power Management: Tie-in power safely using camlocks to generators or house tie-ins. Ability to meter power, balance loads, and understand the ratings of specific cable gauges.
Certifications: Hold scissor lift and boom lift certifications. Forklift certification is a plus.
Team Leadership: Manage a team of lighting technicians, providing guidance and instruction to achieve the desired outcomes.

Your Expertise

Experience: Minimum of 5 years as a Lighting Designer in live events.
Technical Proficiency: Advanced skills in operating lighting consoles and using visualization software.
Creative Skills: Strong artistic vision with the ability to translate concepts into practical designs.
Equipment Knowledge: In-depth understanding of lighting fixtures, control systems, and rigging practices.
Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues efficiently.
Communication: Excellent leadership and communication skills, capable of working collaboratively with other departments.
Certifications: Possession of relevant certifications for equipment operation and safety.
Attention to Detail: Meticulous in planning, documentation, and execution of lighting designs.
Physical Ability: Comfortable working at heights and performing physically demanding tasks.
